Bitter defeat for Würzburg: Speyer beats Baskets 99:92!
The VR-Bank Würzburg Baskets Academy cannot celebrate its first victory in the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProB until further notice. In an exciting home game in the TGW sports center Feggrube against the Ahorn Camp Baskets from Speyer, the team was initially dominant and was in the lead until the final phase of the game.
The initial spark for the defeat was provided by the guests from Speyer, who made use of their experience in the decisive phase of the game. Particularly noteworthy is Daryl Woodmore, an experienced American player who led Speyer's offensive game with 40 points and was crucial for his team, especially in crunch time, i.e. the hectic final phase.
Key events of the encounter
In the first half of the game, the hosts showed an impressive performance, hitting 57 percent of their three-point shots. This helped them hold their own in the game and they led 52-42 until midway through the second quarter. But the visitors, led by their strong playmaker, quickly caught up and by half time the lead had dwindled to just three points.
But the turning point came after halftime. While the Würzburg team only converted one of nine three-pointers, the Speyer team impressed, dominating with significantly better rebounding (50:38) and an excellent offensive performance (24 offensive rebounds and 19 points from second chances). In the end, the Würzburg team still had to admit defeat 92:99.
What's Next? A look into the future
There isn't much time for analysis for the VR-Bank Würzburg Baskets Academy: The next away game is scheduled for next Sunday at the orange academy in Ulm. Head coach Alex King was critical after the game and emphasized that 99 points would simply be too many. He stressed the need to work on defense, especially given the young squad, which is currently not very deep.
The loss of new player Matas Narvilas, who was injured in the first quarter, posed an additional challenge. King praised Woodmore's performance and pointed out that the ProB teams have a lot of quality. The academy now has to make fewer mistakes and earn the respect of its opponents.
Get ready, Würzburg! The next challenge is just around the corner and the team will do everything they can to collect their first points of the season.
