CityWave in the Shopping City: A celebration for the surfing international!

The first CityWave Surf Jam took place on June 6, 2025 in the Westfield Shopping City Süd. At this special event, top international athletes met to combine water and passion. The athletes performed in a new jam format that requires each competitor to perform tricks on the standing wave. The audience was able to experience these impressive performances up close, accompanied by rousing music.

The men's qualification started on Saturday afternoon and led to the highly anticipated semi-finals, which began at 7 p.m. The highlight of the evening was the grand finale at 9 p.m., where floodlights and colorful LED lights transformed the CityWave into an energetic arena. The event participants included the winners of the Rapid Surf League 2024, including Aksinia Semenova from Russia, Marius Gerlach from Munich and Gilbert Yeh from Singapore. Austrian talents such as Gretchen Steiner from Vienna and Niki Sandhoff from Salzburg were also there.

An event for surf fans

The CityWave Surf Jam provided a special atmosphere for surf fans and became the central point of events during the Whitsun weekend. During the month of June, an exciting year was already underway for the surfing community, which also included numerous national and international competitions. A notable event was the German Surfing Championships 2024, which took place from October 11th to 13th, 2024 at the o2 SURFTOWN MUC in Munich.

There were over 10,000 spectators on site at this championship and thousands followed the event via sports shows and YouTube. The title holders were Camilla Kemp and Leon Glatzer, who won the Open Men Shortboard category. In the future, para-surfing, stand-up paddling and longboarding will also be integrated into such competitions, further increasing the diversity of surfing.

Growing surf scene

The success of the CityWave Surf Jam is not only a sign of the growing surf scene, but also the development of new training facilities. The o2 SURFTOWN MUC is increasingly seen as a talent factory for future surf stars. The variety of options for surfers of all levels is remarkable and ensures that German surfing is experiencing a visible boom.

Additionally, Surf Expo 2025, taking place January 8-10, 2025 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, will showcase surf, paddle, skate, swim and footwear products. This platform will be of great interest to both manufacturers and retailers as it reflects extensive developments in the water sports and coastal living industries.

The World Surf League has also released its 2025 Championship Tour calendar, which features 11 regular season events and includes the return of Snapper Rocks and a rematch of Abu Dhabi. All of these developments show how dynamic and lively the international surfing scene is, which is experiencing another highlight with events like the CityWave Surf Jam in the heart of Austria.
