Austrian Jazz Prize: Creativity and diversity in the spotlight!
On Thursday evening, December 5th, 2024, the Porgy & Bess in Vienna shone in the splendor of the newly introduced Austrian Jazz Prize. At the festive ceremony, the outstanding talents of the local jazz scene were honored - in the categories “Live Act”, “Album” and “Newcomer”. Culture and Sports Minister Werner Kogler praised the lively and innovative form of jazz music in Austria and emphasized the social importance of music.
The Jazz Prize trophy is particularly surprising because it is shaped like a football, which became an amusing element of the evening, as reported by Today.at.
The momentum of the evening was opened by the award winners Synesthetic4, who thrilled the audience with their virtuoso performance. Afterwards, the septet E C H O Boomer, led by Beate Wiesinger, presented pieces from their award-winning album “Timeless Warrior”, which surprised with their minimalist elegance and creative song structures.
The talented saxophonist Yvonne Moriel concluded the event with her “sweetlife quartet”. Her performance, characterized by earthy dub and hip-hop beats as well as intense improvisations, provided an impressive final chord as she accepted her award as “Newcomer 2024”. The event was followed by a wide audience, including via livestream, as by Porgy & Bess described.
The awarding of the Jazz Prize is not only an appreciation of the artists, but also an important symbol of the diversity and importance of music in society. Kogler emphasized that music is a universal language that builds bridges between cultures and generations. The next awards ceremony is scheduled for November 26, 2025 in Carinthia, which underlines the continued promotion and deepening of the Austrian jazz scene.
